Kehlani @ Electric Factory 7/10

Oakland native singer/rapper Kehlani is heading to Philadelphia this summer and she is bringing the heat. After making a name for herself as a finalist in a music group on the popular show America’s Got Talent, Kehlani really blew up as a solo artist. In a short amount of time, Kehlani has been considered as one of the best up and coming artists in the game right now. Kehlani recently released her debut album, SweetSexySavage this past January.

Kehlani Ashley Parrish got her start on America’s Got Talent but decided to go solo after the show. Kehlani attended Oakland School for Arts with the intention of studying dance. After suffering an injury, Kehlani focused her time on singing. After couch surfing from being homeless, Kehlani moved out to L.A. to pursue her career in music. In 2014 Kehlani released her first mixtape Cloud 19 which received great reviews. The album was considered as one of the most overlooked albums of the year. After the release of the album, Kehlani opened for rapper G-Eazy on his tour in 2015. Her next mixtape shared the same praise. The same year, Kehlani released her second mixtape, You Should Be Here. The mixtape featured fellow Chicago rappers Chance The Rapper and BJ The Chicago Kid. The mixtape debuted at number 5 on Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album chart and helped Kehlani headline her own sold-out North American tour. The album was also nominated for a Grammy.

Kehlani has been one of the new artists to watch for. In the past, Kehlani has been compared to the likes of Aliyah, Erykah Badu, and many others. Kehlani is quickly moving up in the music business with the skills to back it up. If you haven’t already, go check out Kehlani’s new album, SweetSexySavage.
