Father John Misty Announces Spring 2017 Tour Dates

The American singer/songwriter has just announced that he will be taking his solo act on a pretty extensive North American tour, that includes his appearances at Coachella this year. The tour will be in support of his new album Pure Comedy, slotted for release on April 7. The tour is set to kick off on March 26 at the 6Music Festival in Glasgow, UK; then will take Tillman immediately over to California to begin the North American stint and eventually wrap up back in the UK, fittingly, at the End of the Road Festival in Dorset on August 31 through September 3. For a full list of tour dates and ticketing information, see below.

The new album has seen a few single releases as well as a 25-minute film, seen below, that captures the live-tracking of the album in black and white. This will be the third studio LP for Tillman and will once again be released on Sub Pop, the same label that released his first two albums. For a full track list and the album’s cover art, see below.

As reported by Brooklyn Vegan, Father John Misty has this to say of his album’s title track:

Pure Comedy is the story of a species born with a half-formed brain. The species’ only hope for survival, finding itself on a cruel, unpredictable rock surrounded by other species who seem far more adept at this whole thing (and to whom they are delicious), is the reliance on other, slightly older, half-formed brains. This reliance takes on a few different names as their story unfolds, like “love,” “culture,” “family,” etc. Over time, and as their brains prove to be remarkably good at inventing meaning where there is none, the species becomes the purveyor of increasingly bizarre and sophisticated ironies. These ironies are designed to help cope with the species’ loathsome vulnerability and to try and reconcile how disproportionate their imagination is to the monotony of their existence.

Something like that.

Pure Comedy was produced by Tillman and his long time producer Jonathan Wilson. The vocals for the album were recorded to tape immediately after Tillman wrote them in 2015. There was string, horn, and choral support support added to the album by Gavin Bryars.

UPDATE (4/25): Additional tour dates have been added to the tour, seen below.

Ryan Fricke: Music is my therapy, which I could not function without. I am currently finishing my senior year a Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida with a Journalism major and a Creative Writing Minor. I first realized I wanted to become a Music Journalist the minute I learned that I could get paid to do the two things I love most, writing and listening to music. I have yet to decide which I am more infatuated with but for the time being I will happily house them to their stalemate. My plans after graduation are unclear but I hope to further gain experience in this profession.
