American singer-songwriter Father John Misty just shared two new singles from his upcoming 3rd LP, Pure Comedy. The tracks, titled “Ballad of the Dying Man” and “Two Wildly Different Perspectives” (the latter being released a day earlier than the former), follow up the release of the lead single title track last week.
In light of the album announcement, Josh Tillman (Father John Misty’s real name) also released a 30 minute film titled “Pure Comedy: The Film.” The short film was captured by a six-person room throughout the recording of the album. Tillman co-directed the monochromatic depiction of the live tracking and Tillman’s writing process with Grant James.
Pure Comedy is the highly anticipated follow-up to his 2015 internationally acclaimed album, I Love You, Honeybear. The album will be released April 7th via Bella Union and available in various physical formats through Father John Misty’s official store or Sub Pop.
Tillman wrote the majority of Pure Comedy throughout 2015 and recorded all the basic tracking and vocals live to tape (in no more than two takes each) at United Studios (fka the legendary Ocean Way Studios, favored by Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys) in Los Angeles March 2016.
Pure Comedy was co-produced once again by Josh Tillman and long-time producer Jonathan Wilson; mixed by Tillman, Wilson and Trevor Spencer, and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios. The album features string, horn and choral arrangements from classical iconoclast Gavin Bryars (Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet, Sinking Of The Titanic), with additional contributions from Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlett.
