Crystal Castles @ The Glass House 4/12

From growing from what was once just a moniker to drop music online has become one of the biggest electronic musical acts in the world.  Crystal Castles, formed by songwriter/producer Ethan Kath, started to release music in 2005.  In just one year, Kath’s music began to grow in popularity online and soon recruited vocalist Alice Glass to add another dimension to the Crystal Castles sound.  They recorded and released their first physical four-track EP “Alice Practice” in 2006.  2008 saw the real emergence of the group when they released the self-titled album and was named on NME’s top 100 albums of the decade coming in at number 39.

After an Alice Russel Departure, vocalist Edith Frances took front stage in 2015 and while the band had a slightly different feel and tone, their live performances, which are known to be high-octane and intense, suffered no set backs or loss of electricity.  Ethan’s dedication to the creativity placed in the backdrop of the band while Edith was the face of the band leading to music goers describing their music as “ferocious” and “asphyxiating.”  The BBC took  more existential point of view claiming that their music “is to be cast adrift in a vortex of deafening pain without a safety net. You get the feeling you could do anything in the world, but that ‘anything’ would ultimately mean nothing.”
