Every so often a voice emerges from the depths and ascends into the fresh untapped space where all can hear. Through the calamity and convoluted system of record labels, writers, pop and what’s “fresh”, comes more than a talent but a calling. Michael Kiwanuka, the UK born soul and folk singer is this breath of fresh air, finding comfort through the soothingly painful voice.
Kiwanuka studied at the School of Media, Arts and Design at the University of Westminster where he began playing the guitar and singing. He soon found work as a session guitarist before pursuing his solo career and signing to Communion Records. He released his first EP in 2011 and his first LP “Home Again” in 2012. “Home Again” achieved gold status from both BPI and NVPI.
Drawing influences from legends such as Hendix, Withers, Redding and Dylan, just to name a few, it is no surprise his style is that of an emotional story teller who’s lyrics and sound both shock and soothe you in a simultaneous rhythm of relaxation. Kiwanuka will playing at the Fonda Theatre on Thursday May, 18th during his current world tour.
