Lisa Hannigan has just released a video for her song “Undertow” off of her new album At Swim, that took the artist five years to perfect and has received critical acclaim since.
She has found a way to capture the brilliance of the lyrical imagery in the song and make it into something concrete. The video is mainly comprised of the singer seemingly floating in water. While the bubbles and feathers seem to be able to float upward past her face, Hannigan continues to float up and wait to surface. The sensation of the video was best described in an hannigan-adrift-in-undertow”>NPR article as a sense of falling and floating at the same time.
To add to the romance that the song and video brings, Hannigan was encouraged to learn the song and be able to play it backwards. This was done in order to create a “watery drift of the words” that would help to give the sense of floating, “we felt the best way was for me to learn the song backwards, so that all around me would move upwards, not down. It took a while for the reverse words and melody to sink in — but now I tend to sing the backwards version when on my own,” she was quoted saying in an article by NPR.
