Indie rock band TV on the Radio performed an intimate tribute to Prince this past week at Yale University’s “Blackstar Rising & The Purple Reign: Celebrating the Legacies of David Bowie and Prince” conference. Under blue hues and amidst sentimental listseners, TV on the Radio performed “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the 1990 song written and recorded by Prince. Frontmen Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe showcased their amazing talent, going back and fourth on lead vocals while bandmates played somberly in the background. Lucky for us, the moment was captured on video so die hard Prince fans can take a look at TV on the Radio eloquently take on a classic by The Purple One.
Other prominent figures of the music industry who spoke at the conference were Solange, Questlove, Kimbra, former Prince collaborator Sheila E., and jazz bandleader and Blackstar saxophonist Donny McCaslin. Filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and critics Greil Marcus, Greg Tate, Ann Powers, Alan Light and Michaelangelo Matos also presented this week at the gathering. The conference took place over the course of 4 days, on Jan. 25-28 in New Haven, Connecticut on the University’s campus.
In recent news for the band, TV on the Radio was listed as a headliner next to Ice Cube and Tyler the Creator at Afropunk Brooklyn last year and was featured on The Red Bull 30 Days in LA lineup in 2015.
