Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, STS9 have made a name for themselves in the music scene, and are notable for combining elements of various genres into to their music–from hip-hop to post-rock. As an instrumental act, STS9 have self-described their music as “post-rock dance”. Throughout their almost 20-year long musical career, STS9 have managed to release 11 studio albums, 2 remix albums, and a handful of live performance DVD’s, all through their own record label. The group is notable for appearing at many high-profile music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and Lollapalooza–they’ve also performed three times at ACL.
STS9 got their start in Atlanta, Georgia, and were initially known as Sound Tribe Sector 9. They soon developed their own unique style of music, favoring the use of jazz grooves and instrumental funk. STS9 soon amassed a rather large following, both nationally and internationally. The group released their latest full-length record, The Universe Inside, on September 2nd of last year through their own label, 1320 Records. As the first STS9 album in over seven years, The Universe Inside is very different from their previous works, and explores a much more electronic disco/funk aesthetic.
Don’t miss one of STS9’s legendary live performances when they play back-to-back nights at The Moody Theater later this month.
