After months of teasing fans with a couple singles, indie math-rock champions the Dirty Projectors have finally confirmed details for an upcoming album. The self-titled album will be coming February 24th, delivered by Domino Records. The album will be the band’s 8th full-length following 2012’s critically acclaimed Swing Lo Magellan.
The Dirty Projectors had released their first new song in 4 years with last September’s “Keep Your Name,” and followed it up earlier this month with “Little Bubble.” Both tracks offered a different experience from the eclectic worldbeat influenced drum tracks and intricate guitar lines that made the band known in the first place. Instead, the singles were much more atmospheric and put frontman David Longstreth’s gorgeous falsetto in the spotlight with R&B influences.
To accompany today’s announcement and satiate starving fans, the Dirty Projectors have also let loose a third single in “Up in Hudson.” The track is an epic in length, reaching almost 8 minutes of beautifully intricate instrumentation with Longstreth singing on and on in an almost stream-of-consciousness-like lyrical style.
The lineup of this upcoming iteration of Dirty Projectors seems to remain unclear, after the departure of longtime member Angel Deradoorian in 2012, with only founder Dave Longstreth appearing in the released press photos. The credits to “Up in Hudson” include Longstreth, Tyondai Braxton, Michael Johnson, Mauro Refosco, David Ginyard, Todd Simon, Tracy Wannomae, and Julianne Gralle. Noticeably absent are 4 different thus-far-permanent members: Amber Coffman, Haley Dekle, Nat Baldwin and Olga Bell.
