The xx – the brooding electronic band consisting of childhood friends Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft along with schoolmate Jamie Smith embark on their North American tour in April. The trio (and former member Baria Qureshi) formed the British rock band in 2005 and have stayed not only relevant in the industry but also highly acclaimed despite their shy personas.
The band’s eclectic sound likes to crisscross between indie rock and a poppier sound. Their musical style has progressed over the course of their three albums from indie to pop/R&B. Their discography includes their debut album, xx, which was released in August 2009; Coexist, their second disc, inspired by electronic club music, came out in September 2012; and they just released their third album this past Friday, titled I See You. The band has enjoyed worldwide success, performing at big-name festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza but they have been most recognized in their home country of England. The group was honored with the Mercury Prize in 2010 which is the most prestigious award in the UK pop music industry.
The group members’ personalities are quite timid and shy which is reflected in their performances and lyrics. During live performances, the band is seemingly reluctant to be on stage. But that also seems to be the allure of the trio who often sing about loneliness, lust and love. Croft has said that she has been influenced by Mariah Carey while Sim prefers Aaliyah. The group’s wide ranging taste of music definitely lends to their ever-changing sound. The xx will be performing at Aragon Ballroom May 1st.
