Whether you’re still a die-hard fan, or gave up on them after “Enter Sandman,” you can’t deny the staying power of Metallica. For better or for worse, they continue to put out music that sells and pack venues for performance. Regardless of how you feel about their work as of late, the band can still put on a killer performance like its 1983.
The band recently held a small, intimate show this past week at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood as part of a philanthropic effort by the band. James Hetfield kicks off the infamous riff from “Metal Militia,” one of their standout tracks from their debut project “Kill ‘Em All,” while Kirk Hammet and Robert Trujillo join in frenzy that is the classic thrash anthem while Lars Ulrich is…well he’s there.
Tickets were sold to members of their fan club for $25 (through a lottery system) for $100 to the general public. The band pledged to donate all proceeds to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and they encouraged fans to bring canned foods and non-perishable items to donate along with ticket sales.
The tour comes after they dropped their latest studio album, “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct,” which did well critically in comparison to their previous projects, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 291k copies sold in the first week.
This positive reception has helped band morale, explains Hetfield. “You get such a pleasure and a joy of hearing your new music and having other people hear it.” The band has already rode the wave of momentum with their monster rollout of music videos, and hopes to continue both on the road and in the studio, even without the help of Hammet.
“We’ve booked out two years [of touring]…And I would like to make some new music sooner than eight years, for sure…we don’t wanna wait that long.”
