It’s sort of tricky, trying to describe The Lemon Twigs and what their sound is exactly. It’s eclectic, whimsical, glam and retro—a fusion of music that these two teenage (yes, teenage) brothers, Brian and Michael D’Addario, created in the basement of their parents’ house in Long Island.
Under the creative wing of Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado (who claims to be so astounded by the duo’s extreme talent), the band’s first album release Do Hollywood is a true testament to their unique star power. It also got them signed with British label 4AD and has led them on a rather impressive tour. The brothers take a lot of pride in the arrangements of their songs, just wanting to make music that’s pretty and not complicated when it doesn’t have to be—an admirable philosophy for being so young in age (especially since the album has been written for over two years now).
To get a true flavor of the band’s poppy-dazzling side (which has a serious entertainment factor), watch the music video for “These Words” where the brothers dress in Baroque get-ups and you’ll begin to understand their aesthetic. But The Lemon Twigs’ sound and style isn’t always so hyped, as heard in songs “How Lucky Am I?” and “As Long As We’re Together”—two songs that are dreamy and sunny and very bell-bottom soundtrack-like, but don’t overwhelm you with their synthesized core. Inspired from their time recording in LA, Do Hollywood is a rather striking debut, and still sounds unlike anything you’ve heard before.
