Named after the opening line in Iceage’s New Brigade, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt’s would be side project Marching Church, would later become the full-fledged band we know today.
Rønnenfelt began his career in 2008– at only 16 years of age –fronting the Danish punk rock outfit Iceage. Their debut album New Brigade was released to critical acclaim, and helped them attain popularity outside their hometown of Copenhagen. Inspired by the soul and funk sounds of James Brown and Sam Cooke, Rønnenfelt began recording material on his own, straying away from Iceages’s sonic stylings. Eventually, Marching Church’s popularity quickly exceeded the bounds of “side-project” material, and would require a band for the project to be fully realized.
This World Is Not Enough— Marching Church’s debut LP — was released in 2015, and received generally positive reviews from critics. 2016 saw the bands lineup grow considerably; Iceage bandmate Johan S. Weith (electric viola, guitar), Kristian Emdal (bass), Anton Rothstein (drums), Jakob Emil Lamdahl (trumpet), and Bo Høyer Hansen (guitar) each helped with the recording of Marching Church’s latest effort Telling It Like It Is.
Marching Church will be playing at the Mohawk on January 24th of next year.
