The Mystery Lights @ The Sidewinder 12/1

New York garage rock band The Mystery Lights pride themselves in a 60s/70s, proto-punk, psych rock aesthetic, conveying the instrumentation of pioneers of the genres, such as The Velvet Underground, Iggy and The Stooges, and The Doors. The origins of the group can be traced back to Salinas, California; and started as high school punk project. After the project fell apart, co-founder and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Michael Brandon moved to New York to work on a new project. Guitarist L.A. Solano would later join him New York to complete The Mystery Lights. Influenced by the sounds of 60s garage and punk, the group developed their own unique take on the increasingly popular genre, adhering more to the roots of blues and rock ‘n’ roll.

After some time, they caught the attention of Wick Records, a newly established Daptone Subsidiary. Daptone Records is an established funk/soul label, who boast a roster that includes the likes of Lee Fields, and Charles Bradley. Impressed by the organic, analog recording style that Daptone is known for, the group signed to the Wick Records imprint without a second thought. Solano described the recording of the 2015 single Too Many Girls/Too Tough to Bear, as a “trail run” for the band, as well as the label. In what turned out to be a great recording experience, the group’s decision to sign with Wick was solidified. The following year saw the release of The Mystery Lights, the bands eponymous debut, and the first full-length album released through Wick Records.

The Mystery Lights is currently on tour, and will be playing a show on the 1st of December at The Sidewinder.
