Canadian singer-songwriter Devin Townsend and his band The Devin Townsend Project is releasing their new album Transcendence, and they just dropped part one of their seven part documentary on the making of their upcoming album.
The video was announced via Townsend’s Twitter and it was filmed by close friend Mike Zimmer between March and April earlier this year. It features an intimate scoop from the artists themselves on the recording and song-writing process they went through.
The documentary allows fans to get insight on Transcendence straight from the band themselves, talking about how this album will differ from previous ones. “This record still sounds like a Devin record,” Devin Townsend claimed in the beginning the video. However, Brian Waddell disagreed, and claimed “I think he got a little more creative with this one.”
You can watch as the members bounce ideas off each other in what looks like their recording space, and see how one another contributes to the making of the album as each person adds a unique sound to their work.
Towards the end, you’ll get an inception like twist once you see the band watching themselves in the documentary on a large overhead projector. You can be on the lookout for parts two through seven in the upcoming months before the big drop.
Until then you can watch The Devin Townsend Project’s most recent single, “failure” here
