The first single “Cool Girl” from Tove Lo’s highly anticipated untitled sophomore album is now available to fans.
Tove Lo, the pop star out of Sweden gained a lot of fans back in 2014 when her track “Habits (Stay High)” hit the radio and introduced her to the United States. Tove Lo’s debut album “Queen of the Clouds” went RIAA platinum, and also included the other standout hit “Talking Body” that dominated the Top 20 radio. Tove Lo has since collaborated on songs with Coldplay, Nick Jonas, Years & Years, Broods, Flume, and Alesso. Tove Lo also has an upcoming 6-week tour with Coldplay (listed below).
According to Tove Lo “Cool Girl” is inspired by the thriller Gone Girl, which is even referenced in the track. Tove Lo spoke about the inspiration in her interview with Rolling Stone, “She’s gone full psycho, and she’s sitting there talking about ‘He wanted a cool girl, so I ate pizza. I drank beer. I made a size two. I didn’t give a fuck that he checked out other women.’ I was thinking about it, and it’s really true. Why do we try to be someone we’re not to make someone love us? Would you want to fake yourself for the rest of your life? That’s fucked up. Even though she’s creepy, I kind of thought it was funny that it’s just very common to see that”. The song tackles the dating dilemma between two dating persons acting as if they don’t have feelings for one another.”Cool Girl is about our weird need to play the game of “whoever feels less, has the power” in relationships. You think you want someone who doesn’t want you, or you want someone who isn’t fazed by anything you do. Really we all just want full on, real love”, says Tove Lo. Tove Lo has always written original material, and with “Cool Girl” it really seems that she is spreading the message to not be afraid to express our emotions in relationships.“It’s okay to be pissed off or depressed. You’ll pick yourself back up. We shouldn’t be so scared of our emotions”, she stated. Finally, she spoke to Rolling Stones about this strange “gray area” in relationships where both parties are playing with each other,”In the song, I can tell that he’s trying to play this game with me, and I’m like ‘Yeah, go ahead. Do your thing. I’m being chill.’ But then in the bridge, I reveal that’s not what I want. I want to have a fire. I want to feel that”.
