Veteran Canadian Producer Daniel Lanois has announced a release date for his next solo project, Goodbye To Language, which is set for September 9th via Anti-.
Daniel Lanois new album will bring together sounds of the producer, singer, songwriters significant career from its early beginnings to his current musical interests. Lanois’ album is “Constructed entirely from the sounds of the pedal steel guitar, Daniel on the pedal steel and his mate Rocco Deluca on the lap steel with compositional rigour that recalls the 20th century dreamscapes of Ravel and Debussy, with a sense of sonic futurism and yet also with the naturalness that can only come from someone rooted in centuries of grassroots music” per Anti-‘s press release. Many would think that Lanois’ new work would be affected by artists that the he has collaborated with, but with the producers new work it seems as if that Lanois simply can’t be touched by influences. Lanois spoke in the press release about his music creation process,“I operate under the banner of soul music – music that just feels right and comes from a truthful place”, he said.
Lanois started producing for locals around his hometown in Canada with his brother Bob in the basement of his mother’s house. Once he had started to expand his producing efforts to more local bands, Lanois was able to purchase a house in Ontario where he started Grant Avenue Studios. Lanois would eventually collaborate with Brian Eno on his projects, and also co-produce U2’s The Unforgettable Fire with him. Lanois and Eno would also produce for a few other albums released by U2 including, 1987 Grammy Album of the Year The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, and 2009’s No Line on the Horizon.
Lanois’ work with U2 brought him the opportunity to work with Bob Dylan on many of his albums when he was introduced by Bono in the late 1980’s. In 1989, Lanois produced for Bob Dylan’s Oh Mercy. 8 years after that album, Lanois would win a second Grammy for Album of the Year for his work on Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind.
In October 28, 2014 Lanois returned to his solo career and released his debut album, Flesh and Machine. His debut album was similar to what we can expect with his upcoming album, because it mixes Lanois love for steel-guitar and analog-like sounds.
