Travis Scott’s Astroworld Trial Delayed As Apple Files Free Speech Appeal

Travis Scott on Day 1 of HARD Summer Music Festival 2016

Since the tragic events of the deadly 2021 Astroworld festival, Travis Scott’s trial has been delayed. Many families of victims have filed lawsuits against Scott, and the jury selection was scheduled for Tuesday, May 7. Apple, one of the defendants, however, has since filed an appeal to delay the selection.

Apple was involved in the livestreaming of the concert, and the company is now appealing due to their forced involvement in the trial. The lawsuit is taking place in Texas, and under Texas law the brand can appeal on the grounds of being a member of the media rather than as an active participant in the event.

“It remains our position that our conduct is protected by the First Amendment,” Apple attorney Kent Rutter argued during a court hearing on Thursday.

According to AP, Apple’s legal team and the victims’ legal teams are going to be tied in litigation for some time until a consensus is met.

The festival took a deadly turn following a crowd crush incident which left ten dead and hundreds injured after fans had rushed towards the stage. Officials had claimed that about 300 people were immediately treated at the field hospital located near the festival grounds.
