Experimental indie rock group Exploded View, featuring Anika, are preparing to drop their self-titled album August 19 via Sacred Bones. This week, the band shared their latest single from the album, titled “Lost Illusions.” Listen to the track below:
The band is led by Anika, a Berlin-based musician and political journalist. The band formed in slightly impromptu fashion, with Anika performing solo shows in Mexico with a backing band of Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada and Amon Melgarejo. After the shows the group got together and created new music together, forming Exploded View.
As with much of the band’s work, “Lost Illusions” is a slightly challenging track, starting with with just drums and adding elements until it reaches a droning, piercing climax punctuated by Anika’s distinctly identifiable vocals.
The song is the final single to be released from Exploded View before its release on August 19, following singles “Orlando” and “No More Parties In The Attic.” The album was recorded straight to tape on a Tascam 388 8-track in the San Rafael neighborhood of Mexico City. All of the songs were recorded in a fully improvisational manner, using nothing but first-takes.
