WATCH: Tegan and Sara Release New Video For “BWU”

Indie-pop mainstays Tegan and Sara have premiered a video for their track “BWU”, which featured on their recently released eighth album, Love You to Death. Actress Clea DuVall (Argo, Veep), who directed the video for Love You to Death lead single “Boyfriend”, directed the video for “BWU”.

“BWU’s lyrics stand in direct opposition to Billy Idol’s 80’s anthem, “White Wedding”. The duo declares, “We don’t need a white wedding” and “I don’t need a ring to prove that you’re worthy.” The video furthers its lyrics pro-LGBTQ, anti-marriage message. Sara Quin aimlessly wanders around Los Angeles, proposing marriage to random people using an empty ring box.

In an interview with EW, Quin officially declared her opposition to the institution of marriage.

“I was happy when the Supreme Court ruling legalized same sex marriage in the U.S.A.,” Sara Quin said. I was also relieved that I could finally ‘come out’ as a person who actively dislikes the institution—specifically the assumption that by not participating in the ritual you are a deviant or unlikely to share the same common values as someone who does.”

Love You to Death received critical acclaim, and continued the group’s string of relative commercial successes. They are currently on tour, and will likely not return to the studio for a substantial period of time. Watch the video for “BWU” below.
