WATCH: The Julie Ruin Release New Video For “I’m Done”

The Julie Ruin premiered the music video for “I’m Done” via Rookie Magazine.

Rookie Magazine shared The Julie Ruin’s first music video off of the highly anticipated new album Hit Reset, which will be available tomorrow July 8th. The video for “I’m Done” was directed by Laura Parnes’, and features The Julie Ruin’s front-woman Kathleen Hanna joining with past forms of herself in a karaoke battle against her enemies. Watch below for the full experience, and watch the band perform live next Tuesday, July 12th when they are scheduled to perform live on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers. The band begins their 6-month long tour for Hit Reset starting in Chicago next Thursday night.

The Julie Ruin has an interesting way of coming together as Kathleen Hanna somehow managed to assemble the members without any of them realizing what was even happening. It started back in 2009. Kathleen hadn’t released a new album since Le Tigre’s This Island (2004), and she was ready to get new music out to her fans. Her onetime bandmate on Bikini Kill, Kathi Wilcox was already moving to New York, so Kathleen didn’t even bother finding another bassist. While that was already taken care of, Kathleen abruptly invited Carmine Covelli who had toured with Le Tigre in the past to be drummer at her birthday party who gladly accepted. Next, Kathleen persuaded Sara Landeau to join the band for a  mere exchange of Pro Tools guitar lessons. And finally, approached Kenny Mellman with the idea that they should write country songs together to sell to other artists. Within one week, Kathleen’s “manager” supposedly told her that the two would never break into that industry, so Kathleen said that Kenny might as well join her new band on the keyboards.

After this, the band first got together in January of 2010 in a practice room in Manhattan and learned to play songs from Kathleen’s other projects as well as the first solo Julie Ruin record from 1997. When Kathi finally moved to New York, the band started to work on writing songs that became their first album Run Fast, which released in 2013. In late, 2014 the band began working on Hit Reset, which releases today July 8th. Hit Reset expands on the band’s already established sound: dance filled with some mood spots and background from girl groups.
