Home to Indianapolis, Oreo Jones has released a new hip-hop album that is the combination of social justice and fun word play. The new album is called Cash For Gold.
It very much could be considered a ‘traditional’ hip-hop album, however; “Mud” brings a new direction into the hip-hop scene. He tells a story about the neighborhood of Fountain Square.
The background story of the neighborhood itself helps fans understand “Mud” a lot better and can be relatable to anyone who grows up in a poverty stricken town. Fountain Square is an area where crime rates are high. Houses in the neighborhood are boarded up lost to foreclosure and other financial issues.
Oreo Jones calls his song “Mud” his “social justice record.” In the song he mentions the killings and shootings that were going on at the time and also when a 15-year-old was shot and killed by Indiana Police officers.
In the midst of a misfortunate town comes Oreo Jones. Jones dedicated the soundtrack on Cash For Gold to the wide range of people that reside in the town he is from. Lyrically he paints a picture of the homes and people who are struggling in Fountain Square. “Mud” is by far is strongest song on the entire album because it comes from such a real place in his life.
That goes to say, Jones’ other songs on the album are not all about his neighborhood. “Coogi Sweater” has a chorus that won’t get out of your head because of how repetitive it is, which isn’t terrible at all. The beat to the song is vastly futuristic with a hard base that would sound dope inside a car.
Jones has given Indy rappers a way to show ambition throughout an album. He doesn’t focus on the depressing side of where he came from but also his own persona and how he is able to use his word play abilities to the max.
