The Northern Californian psychobilly punk band Tiger Army is coming back with a bang in their new album V•••– after not having an album release since 2007. The 90s veteran band returns with a fresh new yet classic sound, successfully living up to the standards of their loyal fans.
The third track featured on the new album is “Prisoner of the Night” which embodies a 1950s noir film like quality to the song. The music video itself is completely in black and white and is taken place in Los Angeles/ China Town. The main focal point is a young Bettie Page look alike which places the viewer in a stereotypical male gaze. However, watching the video is a beautiful mixture of California rockabilly presented to through the eyes of cinema magic. What this plays into highly is Nick 13’s attempt to connect rockabilly and country roots with Los Angeles and California identity in general. The singer has often pointed out the lesser known history of Californian country music embedded deep in its history and has done a fantastic job bringing it to the surface.
Nick 13 has come full circle from his adventure as a solo country artist. His 1950s to 60s style inspired music was sure to shake up the mainstream country world. It is no mystery that his country and Americana music influences from this solo journey has made its way in Tiger Army new album V•••–. For example “Train to Eternity” has an unmistakable folk sound. The track contains a story telling attribute that provides immense imagery, allowing the listener to picture their own eternal train ride. This entire album could easily be a soundtrack to southwestern movie scene, sun setting on the train ride into the distance. Tiger Army succeeds in making the music feel renovated and maintaining its original structure, style and character -like an old house completely restored as brand new. This album is a must have.
