90’s alt-rock group Garbage has just released their new song, “Even Though Our Love Is Doomed.” The track is the second single off their new album, Strange Little Birds, to be released June 10.
“Even Though Our Love is Doomed” is a melancholy track with lyrics that wouldn’t be out of place in a teenage girl’s diary. Singer Shirley Manson repeatedly sings the hook “Even though our love is doomed/ Even though we’re all messed up/ You’re the only thing worth fighting for/ You’re the only thing worth dying for.” Even if the words are genuine, they still feel almost whiny. The deep bass and piano, along with the constant shots of animals running through the wilderness, also become a bit bland after a while. For a band that’s been around for over 20 years, the song just seems like a copycat of any other love song on the radio today.
Of course, this song is not representative of Strange Little Birds as a whole. Garbage announced the release of their new album back in March, and have kept busy ever since. The first single off the record, “Empty,” is a solid alt-rock track with a video that embraces the 90’s persona while also living up to the expectations of today. Shirley Manson was a fierce female in rock long before Paramore ever existed, and they don’t want you to forget it.
Since the formation of Garbage in 1993, the band has recorded 5 studio albums and were steadily making music up until their hiatus in 2005. The hiatus ended in 2012 with the release of their fifth album, Not Your Kind Of People. They are now back at it again, with the upcoming release of their sixth album and a series of tour dates across Europe.
