Andrew Bird is coming off of one of his most acclaimed albums to date, our High Fidelity-earning Are You Serious. The album included singles “Capsized” and “Roma Fade,” but perhaps the most powerful song on the album is his duet with the gifted vocalist Fiona Apple, “Left Hand Kisses.”
Music fans who attended Bird’s Downtown Los Angeles concert at the historic Theater at The Ace Hotel this Sunday evening were treated to a special surprise about halfway through the set. After wrapping up another song from Are You Serious, “Puma,” he announced the special surprise to the crowd – Fiona Apple herself was on-hand to provide her half of the lead vocals.
Watch the two perform the song below:
Explaining the meaning of the intense, heart-rending ballad, Bird had this to say: “My inclination was to write a song about why I can’t write a simple love song. The song began as an internal dialogue.”
While at his previous Los Angeles engagement in February, Bird performed the song over two weeks before it was released to the public. At that appearance, he performed the song solo, leaving music fans no idea what the song would in fact sound like when it was released to the public on February 26.
Bird still has several dates left on his tour in support of Are You Serious; though it seems unlikely Fiona Apple will show up at any of them.
