Kim Gordon and Alex Knost’s new band Glitterbust has just released a new music video for their song “The Highline” from the recent self titled album. Glitterbust was released March 4th via Burger but the single came out in mid-February.
“The Highline” music video was directed by Thomas Campbell and recorded in Orange County, CA said Pitchfork. The entire video is in various degrees of ‘blurr’ at nighttime. The video switchbacks between a performance of the band in what looks like a park (though it’s hard to tell with the range of focus) and some translucently covered figures that Gordon calls Aliens.
When asked to describe the figures in the video, Gordon said it “shows alien, embryonic beings traipsing through the empty night, creating a ‘desire path’ through the empty industrial complex of Orange County, like lost cultural ghosts.”
Gordon also gave a little personal insight on where the song gets it’s name to Interview Magazine. It was named after a park that was built on top of abandoned railroad tracks. “On any given weekend [it] looks like a crowded, self-conscious human freeway, surrounded by mirrored glass walls of luxury condos built up around it, casting shadows, part of the moneyed, power landscape.” described Gordon.
Throughout Gordon’s music career she has always tried to draw a deep connection between visual and audible art and has even said in the past that she is more of a visual artist. This was the case when she was a member of Sonic Youth and then Body/Head. You can see in this video and in her well thought out explanation of the clip that she is living out that purpose. She has had several exhibitions over the past several years in both London and New York.
