Frightened Rabbit has just released a new single called “Lump Street”. It is their third single for the upcoming album: Painting of A Panic Attack following “Death Dreams” and “Get Out”. The album was produced by the National’s Aaron Dessner reported Stereogum. The release date is set for April 8th via Canvasback Music/Atlantic.
The lyrics in the song speak of a rather unappealing town that the lyricist seems to live in. It is a sad song with a twinge of hope to it. This theme fits perfectly with the natural yearning twang that one can often hear in lead singer Scott Hutchison’s voice. Near the end of the track the mood of the song subtly but completely changes to a more upbeat rhythm with a shift to the heart in the lyrics as well. The metaphorical character has decided to get up from his sorrows and look for the good in the town and make the best of the situation he is in.
This song has some interesting parallels to Hutchison’s real life due to the recent move he took to Los Angeles two years ago. He has spoken openly about how it has been a hard transition for him and that this album has a lot of inspiration from that transition.
The band originally began as a solo project by Hutchison and soon after he was joined by his brother Grant on drums and Billy Kennedy on guitar. When asked in an interview about his future plans, Hutchison told the AV club“I’d like to continue challenging myself and taking different subject matters. Maybe I’ll take something altogether different for the next one that isn’t anything to do with my life whatsoever.”
Meanwhile Frightened Rabbit has plans to start touring just after the album is released at the end of April. They will kick off in Portland Oregon at the Wonder Ballroom on the 21st. Learn more about special shows here.
