Kesha has gained support from another Pop icon as Lady Gaga has made a statement backing her in her time of need as her request for an injunction has just been denied, While Sony has finally broke their silence on the issue.
Kesha has come forth with allegations that her producer, Dr. Luke, has sexually assaulted her for nearly decade. She has since put in a request for an injunction against the producer and her record label, Sony Music. Her request has just been denied by Manhattan Supreme Court, according to Consequence of Sound. Since the denial there has been several different pop starts that have stepped forth to show Kesha their support. Demi Lovato backed Kesha through social media, while Taylor Swift took it a step further and donated $250,000 “to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time.”
The support hasn’t stopped there as Lady Gaga has now joined in with a statement that she has issued in support of Kesha. As any fan of Gaga knows, she, herself, has been a victim of sexual assault. With this common ground Gaga is calling an end to victim shaming, which is the immediate rejection of truth from the plea of an alleged victim of a sexual attack. She goes on to say that shaming is, “the very reason women don’t speak up for years is the fear that no one will believe them or their abuser has threatened their life or life of their loved ones/livelihood in order to keep their victim quiet and under control.” Gaga also writes, “What happened to Kesha has happened to many female artists, including myself, and it will affect her for the rest of her life.”
“No one needs to validate Kesha,” she continues. “Why is victim always the ‘liar’? Why do we let people in a position of power get away with behaving inhumanely? These guys hide behind the legal system and it’s their litigious behavior that is precisely what they use to rape these girls. ‘Give me what I want or else I will come after you’ and they have all the money and the resources to do it.”
Dr. Luke has gone on to deny all of Kesha’s accusations of sexual abuse. He has gone even further to say that her lawsuit is nothing more than “Extortion.”
According to Rolling Stone, Scott Edelman, a lawyer representing Sony has come forth to finally break the companies silence on #freekesha. Edelman said, “Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha.”
The ability to actually terminate Kesha’s contract is out of Sony’s hands has it actually belongs to Dr. Luke’s company, Kasz Money, as reported by Rolling Stone. The company has a separate deal with Sony’s RCA/ Jive subsidiary.
“Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party,” Edelman added.
Kesha has issued her own statement since the court’s decision saying how all she ever wanted was to make music without being afraid, scared or abused.
“This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal,” Kesha adds. “This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser. But at this point, this issue is bigger than just about me.”
