The new album is named after a Japanese word for “phenomenon” and features over 150 minutes of new music. The vast amount of music will be separated into two CDs and four LPs. The Boris songs are going to be percussion-less reinventions of classic tracks from the band’s storied catalog. The Merzbow songs will all be entirely new compositions.
The two artists have made a name for their collaborative acts that have stung as far back as nearly a decade now. Merzbow is usually known for joining as a temporary fourth member of the band on various performances and albums. The working relationship is a very strong and healthy one and this fact is evident in the work that they have done together. The duo has released three studio albums together, two live albums and one 12” EP. According to a press release by the group, “Boris helps to shape Merzbow’s wall of noise as a composed musical score with structure, and to make it easier to access the noise master’s music while Merzbow adds an extreme high frequency to Boris’s signature heavier sound.”
