Emma-Lee Moss, or as most of the public that knows her by her stage name Emmy the Great, has announced that preceding her 2016 US tour, the London based singer/songwriter will be releasing her highly anticipated third album Second Love, under the Bella Union label. The album is set to drop on March 11th and received contributions from many different popular musicians in order to create a stunning new piece of work.
For her new work Emma took it upon herself to write the songs in several different cities in order to get inspired, each song tracks the resulting personal changes in herself and explores the world around us, filtered through technology.
Starting this album off, and setting the tone, is the track “Swimming Pool” (feat. Tom Fleming) taken from this year’s critically acclaimed EP. While the writing of this track started off in Asian cities, it was not completed until Emma came back to Northern London in the summer of 2012. It took her three years trying to chase the sound she was looking for, but when she found what she was looking for she knew it would be tender enough to start off Second Love, and lead the listener on a journey of exploration through a new, technological filtered world.
However, according to Moss, it is not until the “Algorithm”, which is the third track of the album, that we reach the meat and potatoes of the album. Emma Lee-Moss states “It’s about searching for the meaning in the noise” she goes on “It [Algorithm] encapsulates the feeling behind the whole album”
At the press conference for the announcement of the new album Emma stated that when she was living in Los Angeles in 2013 “I was optimistic about the world changing and rapidly advancing, but over time the optimism gave way to something more complex and fearful. Technology and ideas which seemed entirely positive now feel equally as dangerous,” she continues “In all the uncertainty, I couldn’t say for sure whether this is Utopia or Dystopia or something in between, but for some reason it only made me more certain of one thing: that, wherever we’re heading, we’re going to need music, and we’re going to need love. ‘Second Love’ not only helped me reach this conclusion, it led me to almost every good thing that has happened to me in the last three years.”
Not only gifted with the ability of incredible singer/songwriter skills, Moss has the ability to walk the line between bold observations about the human condition and heart wrenching fragility through her songs.
Emmy the Great’s new album features the assistance of a slew of talent that would impress any producer of a music album. the album features musicians from all areas of the spectrum, including Tom Fleming(Wild Beasts), Leo Abrahams (Pulp/ Brian Eno), SimonOscroft (MXTHER), Henry Kwapis, O Karmina, Du Blonde (akaBeth Jeans Houghton), Nick Trepka (Speech Debelle), Fyfe Dangerfield (Guillemots), Gabriel Bruce, as well as her brother Robin Moss, with writer and broadcaster Jon Ronson authoring the album’s liner notes. To help bring it all together the help of Dave McCracken (Oh Land/ Beyonce) & Ludwig Goransson (Haim/Childish Gambino) were recruited to produce the album, and Neil Comber (MIA) was brought in to do the mixing.
All in all this looks to be another successful, emotionally filled, inspiring LP that was created by an artist who shows nothing but passion and love for their craft.
