LISTEN: Chris Farren Covers The Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love”

Not just anyone can remake Diana Ross’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” and get away without an uproar. Legends in the past such as Bette Midler, The Jackson 5 and The Dixie Chicks have all attempted a cover; even Phil Collins made a rendition before he dropped out of the music business altogether. This time, however, it’s indie rock artist Chris Farren giving whack at the song. His secret? Take the Motown out of Motown’s finest.

Farren, who makes up one-half of Antarctigo Vespucci and one-fourth of Fake Problems, has now made up his own indie folk version of “You Can’t Hurry Love” for Artistic Integrity Records’ comp album, Not the Same Old Song: A Tribute to Motown. Farren’s contribution is one of 18 tracks redoing the most time-honored Motown songs including “My Girl,” “Dancing in the Street” and “Please, Mr. Postman.” Artists such as The Please and Thank Yous, Dogjaw, Mean Sean and Jack & Ace are also featured.

The album, released Jan. 1, is selling for $3 on Artistic Integrity Records’ Bandcamp. Though the compilation will not be sold through physical copies, they included the following message on their Bandcamp page: “just ‘donate’ $5 or more, and i’ll send you a record. the more you donate, the more you get.”
