If you thought you had discovered the next new artist with Larry Fisherman, well, you haven’t. Hip-hop artist and rapper Mac Miller (whose real name is actually Malcolm James McCormick, by the way) loves making up new names for himself. He’s put out music under several aliases in the past two years, and going by the name Larry Fisherman, Miller has taken no time off for the holidays. He released three new songs on Soundcloud this past week. Alongside two originals, Mac/Larry posted a cover of Billy Joel’s “Vienna.”
Mac’s rendition is a shadowy, robotic version of Joel’s — it’s slowed and stripped of any instruments besides a dark synth pad. His voice is masked by a filter so that it’s way deeper. If you didn’t already know that Mac and Larry were one in the same, it’d be hard to draw the connection. You may have just assumed that Bane grabbed hold of a recording mic and went to town.
“Vienna” was the first track Mac/Larry had put on Soundcloud in three months. Four days later, he posted two more songs, “Run on Sentences, Volume Two” and “Smile” — adding to 59 tracks on the site as Larry Fisherman. As Mac Miller (the original), he released the 17-song album, Good A.M., earlier this year, featuring Little Dragon, Miguel, Lil B and AB-Soul.
And why the aliases? Mac told MTV that artists are used to “pigeonhole people into looking up to one role model.”
“I’m gonna make music, and I’m gonna capture every aspect of being a human being,” Miller said. “That’s really all I’m trying to do.”
