Michael Stipe Performs Cover Songs As Surprise Opener For Patti Smith

Michael Stipe, frontman to R.E.M., made surprise visit as the opening act for musician Patti Smith. Smith was in New York performing at concert and when the surprise act was revealed, social media platforms sprang to life with videos of Stipe behind a microphone. It was one of the nights that many fans of Patti Smith would never tend to forget.

Smith was doing an opening gig at the Beacon Theatre in New York on Tuesday night. Some of the overs that took place included “Old Man” by Neil Young, The Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs”, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, and David Bowie’s “All the Young Dudes”. Fans shot videos of the covers and posted them onto Instagram and other social media platforms. So not only did fans get to hear some Smith, but they also heard some Stipe.
