After more than two years, they are back. The mysterious countdown clock on the Deerhunter website hit zero and the band’s seventh studio album was set for release on October 16, 2015. The transcendent record intermingles with minimalist funk, as highlighted by the new music video for the track, “Snakeskin”.
Following the death-rattle garage catharsis of 2013’s Monomania, the group has shifted towards something strikingly balanced, focused on melody and texture. The songs are brighter; if not in content, then in the album’s production. Starkness plays against clutter in what is the band’s most complex yet accessible work to date.
After Deerhunter’s 2013 album release and tour, lead singer and guitarist Bradford Cox was injured in car accident. The frontman’s injury didn’t hinder the indie rock band from staying busy. Moses Archuleta released a casette for Care Package, Geographic North’s Sketch for Winter cassette series. Fading Frontier is Deerhunter’s first release since Cox’s allegedly critical accident.
Fading Frontier was written by the band’s founding members (Bradford Cox, Lockett Pundt, Moses Archuleta, and bassist Josh McKay) in their hometown of Atlanta, CA. In a continuing collaboration that was sparked 2010’s Halcyon Digest, Ben H. Allen III produced the record. After the release, Deerhunter will kick off a month-long tour of Europe at Paris’ Pitchfork Festival on October 29th, ending on November 22nd at the Le Guess Who Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Even after ten years, Deerhunter’s enthralling intensity lingers, pushing the band into “the most consistent purveyors of art-rock of their generation”.
