American rock band Of Montreal have just released a new music video for their track “Last Rites at the Jane Hotel”.
This video features a stop motion style, allowing certain artistic elements to shine in the design. The colorful animation of “The Last Rites at the Jane Hotel” really stands out with its eclectic cartoonish design. With psychedelic visuals reminiscent of the 1970s, the contrast between the visuals and the lyrics of “The Last Rites at the Jane Hotel” is unique for the band Of Montreal. The track includes some funky melodic catches and a great beat lasting throughout the entire song. Of Montreal did a unique job of incorporating darker lyrics with an almost sarcastically colorful video. When discussing the stylistic choices in the video, lead animator of the project Matthew Cooper said the following:
“The tone of the song’s lyrics are quite dark…but the music has the technicolor and upbeat kind of tone to it so I think that’s what I tried to do with the video. There’s a lot of morbid elements. I tried to represent those very vivid, bubblegum sort of color schemes.”
Technicolor this video definitely is. It highlights the whole aesthetic of Of Montreal’s album Aureate Gloom, which is influenced by “the mid to late 70’s music scene in New York”. An eclectic era to focus an album on for sure, Of Montreal starts to break their boundaries as a band and experiment with newer, more experimental styles.
The band from Georgia has also just announced their fall North American tour, beginning August 21st in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Since 1996, Of Montreal have been making their name as a rock and roll band with an ever evolving music style. However a consistency with Of Montreal is their trend to draw in psychedelic influences and factors in their material. “The Last Rights at the Jane Hotel” hits both nails on the head by proving how Of Montreal’s music style is ever evolving, but they can stick to some solid psychedelic influences to produce a genuinely classic track.
