Modest Mouse has elected to pay homage to what will probably stand as one of the most significant, influential shows of our generation: Game of Thrones. Their video for “The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box” shows a slightly different perspective on the fantasy epic by putting the crazy ones in charge.
Game of Thrones has taken the world of cable television by storm. Its fans are perhaps the most rabid fans since the original Star Wars generation. The show itself drives many of its fans insane with death of characters happening left, right, and center, creating a legend behind the show that no character is safe. Ever. In their new video for the single “The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box,” Modest Mouse pays homage to the show by setting the video in a world where nobody is safe, but that’s because most of the people that live in the kingdom are at least moderately insane.
The video stars Isaac Brock as the king of this bizarre land, wielding a scepter adorned with a broken light bulb. We’re not sure how Brock came into power, but we see multiple threats to his kingly reign throughout the video. The climax of the video shows a king from a rival kingdom arriving to challenge Brock’s rule, and the two duke it out for control of the kingdom. One king emerges victorious, and the other king is defeated in a crystal-clear reference to Game of Thrones. It’s a spectacularly produced video, and the references to the HBO hit are peppered throughout, so if you’re a fan of both Modest Mouse and Game of Thrones, there’s no reason not to check this video out.
“The Ground Walks, With Time In A Box” is the third single released off of their eighth studio album Strangers To Ourselves, which was released back in March. They have also done a video for “Coyotes” and released a track called “The Best Room” off of the record. They are currently slated for a slew of concert dates and music festivals, including performances at this year’s Sloss Fest and the Riot Festival in Denver.
