British rock band Wolf Alice has released their third single from their upcoming LP My Love Is Cool, titled “You’re Germ” via Dirty Hit/RCA Records. As reported by Under the Radar, Wolf Alice will be performing the song on June 16th on Conan, ahead of a major five month tour that will span both the American and European continents.
The North London alt-rock band consists of singer Ellie Rowsell, lead guitarist Joff Oddie, bassist Theo Ellis, and drummer Joel Amey. It was originally founded by Roswell and Oddie in 2010, and named for a short story by Angela Carter. They originally garnered attention with their Blush EP in 2013, which featured their first hit “She”. Since then, they have been working on their first studio album, the aforementioned Love Is Cool. NME has likened them to Courtney Love’s Throwing Muses, and NPR compared them to The Sundays and The Smashing Pumpkins.
The song starts with laden vocals over a rhythm guitar. At fifteen seconds in, the energy picks up as the line from the title repeats. Interestingly, the “You’re a germ” line is sung in an uplifting, rather than an accusatory tone. After the chorus is belted out, distorted guitar takes over, then the drums start smashing. From here, the energy is maintained until a break featuring a simply strummed rhythm guitar comes back. Next time this break is over, Rosswell starts belting a countdown, which is followed by a defiant chorus, anchored by the lines “You ain’t going to Heaven// Don’t think you’re going to hell”.
The band is looking to make a big splash ahead of their release of their first studio album My Love Is Cool, which is slated to come out June 22nd. They released two singles earlier this year: A-side “Giant Peach”, with B-side “Bros”. Both tracks have the same stripped-down, yet gritty feel, topped off by Roswell’s melodious vocals. She has said of her band’s sound: “We’ve been making sounds that don’t necessarily sound like guitar and experimenting with the way we use our voices. We’ve tried to match the emotion of the songs in how they’re performed and recorded, tried to make a sad song really feel and sound sad.”
