Today disco legend Giorgio Moroder released a new single titled “Diamonds” featuring Charli XCX.
(Update: Song currently unavailable)
Giorgio Moroder is not only a producer, but a pioneer for the genre of disco with. The Italian rooted performer is mostly known for his work with the queen of disco Donna Summer in the 70’s. Giorgio is back after a long hiatus (by long hiatus I mean it has been exactly three decades) with the release of his new album Déjà Vu. Giorgio is looking to incorporate the sounds of the era where bell-bottoms and roller skates reigned supreme into today’s soundscape. Moroder is known to deal heavily with synths, and a lot of people give him credit for laying the foundation of Electronic Dance Music (or EDM for short).
The buildup for the album has been happening for a little bit under a month now. The official announcement of Déjà Vu came on April 16th. A couple weeks ago, Giorgio let loose the second track off the album when he released a song with Sia that shares the name of the album. But before the release of Déjà Vu ft. Sia, Giorgio Moroder let loose a video for “Right Here Right Now” featuring Kylie Minogue. The album will be released through RCA. Giorgio Moroder, 74, still feels like he has the power to create music that people will enjoy, and be able to move to.
As mentioned before, this will be Moroder’s first album in thirty years. “Diamonds” features pop princess Charli XCX. The energetic style of the song is equally matched with Charli’s powerful vocals. Some would wonder if Moroder could “get with the times”, but that wonder is proved not to be necessary. Giorgio still has the chops to create exciting, and more importantly relevant music. The disco influence is clearly still there, but instead of coming off as a disco-genered song, Charli XCX turns “Diamonds” into a modern dance song that pays tribute to disco. More music should be coming from the Moroder camp the closer the release date approaches. Until then, check out “Diamonds” featuring Charli XCX above.
Déjà Vu will be available for consumption on June 12th .
