Saul Williams @ The Roxy on 4/27

Hip-hop and poetry artist Saul Williams will perform at the Roxy at April 27, supported by Sons of an Illustrious Father. Williams is an award-winning screenwriter/actor and has had lead roles in the 1998 film “Slam” and “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” a Broadway musical featuring music by Tupac Shakur. He has also published four books of poetry: “The Seventh Octave”, “S/he”, “Said the Shotgun to the Head” and “The Dead Emcee Scrolls.”

New York native Williams received recognition while supporting Nine Inch Nails for parts of their 2005-2006 tour. Williams said, “I write poetry because it is the clearest and most direct expression of how I think.” However, he does not only want to be known for being a poet. He self describes himself as an artist, who writes, acts and performs depending on his mood. “Most of the labels that are projected onto me are seldom how I would choose to refer to myself,” Williams said.

Williams has released four full length albums to date: Amethyst Rock, Saul Williams (Self-titled), The Inevitable Rise of Niggy Tardust and most recently, Volcanic Sunlight (2011). His work blends poetry and alternative hip hop in new and creative ways. Be sure to check out Saul Williams at The Roxy later this month.
