Foster the People is an American indie pop band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. The group is composed of Mark Foster, Jacob Fink, and Mark Pontius. The group’s music is categorized as dance, but consist of traces of pop, rock, and many other genres.
Foster founded the group after spending several years as a struggling musician and working as a commercial jingle writer. In 2010, Foster’s song “Pumped Up Kicks” became a viral success, and the group received a record deal from Startime International. In 2011, they released their album, Torches, and their single “Pumped Up Kicks” eventually peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also spawned the hits “Helena Beat” and “Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls).”
Their most recent album is, Supermodel, which became popular by the songs “Best Friend” and “Coming of Age.” The album is a concept album which features common and heavy themes of negativity towards modern pop culture and consumer ideology throughout the record. In a interview with Paste Magazine, Foster states the album deals with primarily social issues and “the ugly side of capitalism.”
