The alt-country and folk rock band The Lone Bellow will be making a stop at El Rey Theatre in June. The Brooklyn-based, Southern-born trio consists of Zach Williams (guitar, lead vocals), Kanene Donehey Pipkin (mandolin, bass, vocals) and Brian Elmquist (guitar, vocals). The band’s latest output is Then Came the Morning released by Descendant Records on January 27 of this year.
The band began after Williams’ wife was injured in a horseback riding accident. Doctors first said she would leave the hospital a paraplegic. However after months of rehab, she regained the ability to walk. It was during this time that Williams began to write his thoughts into a journal. Friends realized the potential of his writings and urged him to learn how to play guitar and to turn his journal entries into songs.
Once the couple moved to New York, Williams met with old friend Elmquist at Dizzy’s Diner in Park Slope in 2010. Pipkin was invited to join them and then the trio was formed. Since then, the band has gone on to two full length albums to date. Be sure to check out their soulful acoustic rock style at El Rey Theatre in June.
