Sam Prekop @ El Rey Theatre 6/8

Sam Prekop will be at the El Rey Theatre June 8. The Chicago-born guitarist was a part of Shrimp Boat before becoming a part of The Sea and Cake. His style has been considered pop-rock, indie, alternative, and experimental. He is also known for being a modular synthesist who is able to create new sounds with an instrument that has many different types of filters and sequencers.

Prekop’s first solo album had a large cast of contributors, including Chad Taylor of the Chicago Underground Duo, Josh Abrams of Town and Country, Jim O’Rourke, and the Sea and Cake’s Archer Prewitt. The result was a mix of soul, jazz and pop. It would be another five or so years before Prekop released his second solo album that was mostly considered a post-rock album. But it wasn’t until the release of his third album Old Punch Card that things started to get really electronic. Prekop did not limit himself to one sound. Instead he opened himself up to wherever his muse took him.

His most recent release is The Old Republic, released in February of this year. It follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, engulfing the listener in electronic, mechanical unpredictability. Although the music he makes would be considered abstract to most, it is still enjoyable to listen to without feeling too challenged. To enjoy Prekop live, check him out at El Rey Theatre.
