American funk and R&B singer Charles Bradley will bring the James Brown-like soul to The Roxy on April 18. Bradley released his debut album No More Time for Dreaming at age 63 in 2011, which received universal acclaim and placed number 40 on “Top 50 albums of 2011” by Mojo. His second album Victim of Love was released in 2013.
Bradley has come a long way and lived a long life of trials and tribulations to get to where he is now. He was born in Gainesville, Florida, and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He once worked as a chef in Maine and a series of odd jobs throughout the years. It wasn’t until Bradley caught the attention of Gabriel Roth of Daptone Records that Bradley entered into label sessions.
Aside from working on his own songs, Bradley has also appeared on “Take It As It Comes” from the album Pure Cane Sugar by The Sugarman 3. Bradley’s cover of Nirvana’s “Stay Away” was also featured on Spin’s Newermind album, a compilation of Nirvana covers. Be sure to catch Bradley as he makes a stop at The Roxy next month!
