British breakthrough act FKA twigs will be at the Belasco Theatre April 14 performing her melancholic, electronic, trip-hop songs to a crowd of newly-formed fans. Although the singer, songwriter, producer and dancer began her professional music career as recently as 2012, FKA twigs has risen to popularity thanks in part to the numerous music videos on YouTube she’s in. Most have more than 1 million views each with the highest video being “Two Weeks” with more than 8 million views.
FKA twigs is 27 years old from Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, and is part-Jamaican and part-Spanish. Growing up, she studied ballet and sang on tracks recorded at a local youth club. When she was 17, she moved to London to pursue a career as a dancer but realized she would rather be a singer and musician. Her sound is a fusion of R&B and experimental.
FKA twig’s 2012 EP1 was self-released, but she later signed onto Young Turks label for her 2013 EP2, which jumped to #5 on the US Dance and Electronic charts and #13 on the US Top Heatseekers. Her first full length album LP1 released last August charted high on multiple countries’ lists including Australia, France, Germany and New Zealand. FKA twigs is getting views and sales at an incredible pace and shows no signs of slowing down.
