Big Data are known for working with some of the biggest names in music on elaborate collaborations. They fulfill expectations in this newest track featuring vocals from Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo.
Big Data have a new single out with alternative rock icon Rivers Cuomo, and the result is a tech-savvy track that relies on Big Data’s heavy-handed production style.
You might be taken aback when you hear Cuomo’s opening line in the song. It certainly sounds nothing like Cuomo’s famous Weezer, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the indie rock influence. When Big Data, an electronic project led by Alan Wilkis, work with a guest artist, the project has a reputation for bringing out the bare essence of the guest’s music style and molding it to fit with their signature compositions.
On “Snowed In,” you hear Cuomo call over the chorus, “Baby I told you I’d be there. No need for you to feel so scared.” You would be hard-pressed to identify him as Weezer’s frontman in this song, but you can hear his signature vocal style around the edges of the long, drawn-out notes in the chorus. This is where he opens up as a guest singer.
Most of the rest of the song relies on staccato, electronic-based notes, with huge sythnesizers and thumping drums. Its repetitive melodies coax listeners into a meditative lull. The lyric video adds to this focus on electronics, with an HTML frame code typing out every word coming from Cuomo’s mouth.
“Snowed In” is part of Big Data’s newest record 2.0. The album also features guest appearances from Twin Shadow’s George Lewis Jr. and Kimbra. Look out for the latest album on March 24 from Warner Bros.
Rivers Cuomo has been busy with the latest Weezer project, a new album titled Everything Will Be Alright In The End. The band released its first single from the record with “Cleopatra,” which you can listen to right here. Now that work on the new record is complete, it looks like Cuomo is spending his time with special projects like this one. He also recently joined Real Estate on stage for performance of “No Other Love.”
