If cars could run on any fuel source other than octane, Zola Jesus’s “Compass” would be that very fuel. Making for a perfect companion for “Hunger,” released earlier this year, “Compass” has enough power and emotion behind it that it’s a wonder why the singer-songwriter didn’t elect to release a double-A-side single on digital release. “Compass” contains fiery vocals as well as operatic yet heavy electronic rhythms, making for an impressive 2015 single release. Where “Hunger” contains a kind of tension so thick that you could cut it with a knife, “Compass” is more laid back and free, unbound by any sort of tightly-controlled structure, allowing Zola Jesus the expressive freedom to let her vocals stretch out a little bit more, the result of which puts her on par with any female vocalist of this generation. A spectacular song with a vast musical landscape, “Compass” will be available for public release on February 10th.

“Compass” is the second single released off of Zola Jesus’ fifth studio record, Taiga, record that combines elements of classical, electronic, and goth music all into one fantastic sound. Accompanying the record release and the two singles that have thus far been released, Zola Jesus has also lined up dates for a Spring 2015 tour, which will run cross country in addition to a couple of dates in Mexico and plenty of tour dates across Europe.
