Charli XCX celebrated her dual Grammy nominations by strutting her stuff on the Late Show’s stage with piano accompaniment by Rostam Batmangilj of Vampire Weekend.
The performance is a cross between classic lounge cliches and edgy modern elements, giving it a sense of timelessness without losing it’s contemporary appeal. The audience might get a Peggy Lee vibe from the way Charli XCX dances on the piano, but her glittery platform wedges are as glamorous as punk rock ever looks. It’s a riveting performance, whether she’s off in her own world or interacting playfully with Batmanglij.
2014 has been a very fruitful year for Charli XCX. In addition to her two Grammy nominations for her work on Iggy Azalea’s breakout single “Fancy”, she has released two new songs in the past month, “Breaking Up” and “Gold Coins.” She also recently covered the Barrett Strong classic “Money (That’s What I Want),” which will be available on European versions of her album Sucker.
Charli XCX has also gained attention from her single “Boom Clap,” which was featured on the soundtrack for The Fault in Our Stars. “Boom Clap” was also selected as one of mxdwn’s Top 40 Songs of 2014.
Batmangilj also recently performed on a remix of Ty Dolla $ign’s “Stand For” with Grizzly Bear’s Edward Droste and original producer Diplo.
Consequence of Sound first posted about the performance, which you can see in full below.
