On Sunday night in Tulsa, OK, Ryan Adams and Jenny Lewis helped each other out singing some soul-wrattling renditions of some of their hits together. The lighting is perfect and the vibe is just right. Dig it.
There is just something about this concert and the footage here that is really visceral. It is a mix of the lyrics and lights, the stars and the strumming, the crowd and the croons; it seems like one of those concerts that you walk out of asking yourself the bigger questions about love and strife and life and happiness. Like a magical moment where your awareness has been multiplied to a potential that only certain moments can incite.
Ryan Adams has had a busy year, with the release of a self-titled album, which is his 14th solo-career release. He also helped Jenny Lewis create her latest album, The Voyager, acting as co-producer as well as playing on many of the tracks. Jenny Lewis was accompanied onstage by Adams during “Just One Of the Guys”, “Head Underwater” and “Love U Forever” during her opening set. She in turn supported Adams on two of his most powerful tunes, “Come Pick Me Up” and “Sweet Carolina”, songs which have eternal heart and sometimes seem to reach into you and strum some foreign and forlorn chord on the fretboard of your soul. “Come Pick Me Up” and “Sweet Carolina” are off of Ryan Adams’ first effort, which was released by Bloodshot Records in 2000, called Heartbreaker. “Just One Of the Guys”, which is one of Jenny’s most well known, is off her newest effort, The Voyager.
The performance of each song is great. Certain moments stand out, such as the chorus of “Come Pick Me Up”, where the camera pans over to Jenny as she harmonizes with Ryan’s back up rhythm player, and the red and blue lights are painting them slowly one then another color. We are looking forward to more collaborative work between these two immense musicians, and we hope to see them onstage together again soon. After watching the videos below, you’ll realize why it goes without saying that they’re a great fit.
