Run the Jewels members meet their ambitious fan and discuss the logistics of the Meow the Jewels album. For those who don’t know, this album will feature only cat sounds in the remake of their most recent album.
In case you haven’t read our earlier articles covering the Meow the Jewels project, here’s a quick background on the story. Run the Jewels member El-P mentioned in an interview that it would be fun to remake their most recent album, RJT2 using only sounds produced by cats. What may have started as a joke became very real, very fast, as fan Sly Jones began a Kickstarter campaign that reached its target goal of roughly $40,000 10 days before the given deadline.
The video on Stereogum offers a look into the meeting between Run the Jewels and the fan who began the Kickstarter campaign. Sly Jones of Phoenix, Arizona explains his motivation for starting the campaign, providing us with a hilarious visual of El-P mixing cat noises over the soundboard, after mentioning the interview where El-P hatched the brilliant idea. Neither party seemed to anticipate the momentum that would build, and soon after, fund the production of Meow the Jewels. The duo also mention in the video that all proceeds of the album will go towards charity, particularly the families of victims of police brutality. Run the Jewels is shown performing in Phoenix, where they bring Sly Jones up on stage and thank him for making the campaign happen and emphasizing the importance of the charity the album’s proceeds will go towards.
This project is truly an innovator in its genre, pushing new boundaries that were formerly unknown and entirely unheard of. But one thing is for sure, you’re not going to want to miss it. Stay tuned for future developments of the cat-inspired hip-hop album.
