Creator of Housecore Horror Film Festival Corey Mitchell Has Died

Co-founder of a unique festival that showcased metal and horror films passed away during the last night of the event.

Corey Mitchell, nationally acclaimed horror novelist, contributor of over 150 articles to the metal magazine MetalSucks, band manager and metal radio disc jockey passed away yesterday, during the last night of the Housecore Horror Festival which he co-founded with Phil Anselmo. His festival is the realization of a dream that involved metal, horror films and exhibits; it returned to Austin this year for its second annual appearance. MetalSucks and BrooklynVegan reported that Corey had suffered from a heart attack at Emo’s which is the festival’s main venue, late in the evening last night. The festival’s facebook page posted this:

Thank you all for a fantastic weekend – it is, however, with a heavy heart that we here at Housecore Horror Film Festival must announce that our friend and the father of this wicked brain-child, Corey Mitchell, passed away this morning.

Please send your thoughts and prayers to his family. He loved the festival. He loved horror. He loved metal. You damn sure know he loved you guys. Cheers, and thank for your respect during this sensitive time.

Corey had been working on a biography for Phil Anselmo, of Superjoint Ritual and DOWN; the pair had collaborated extensively on creating and nourishing the brainchild that developed into one of the most unique festivals in the world. He is survived by two daughters. Rest in peace, Corey.
